A tornado begins when a cold air mass blows over a warm air mass. The warm air tries to rise and the cold air wants to sink as the two air masses push hard against each other. After time, the hot air finds a weak spot in the cold air and shoots up like a fountain in the sky. This creates a mighty, whirling wind.
